The organisers of USA's National Preparedness Month, which coincides with the 9/11 anniversary, have this year embarked on a big push to get people prepared, urging them to take precautions in readiness for natural and man-made disasters. They are also promoting volunteerism to help provide disaster relief.

New Standard Boosts Sustainability.

The British Standards Institution has launched a new standard to help manufacturers demonstrate best practice regarding the sustainability of their products. BS 8905:2011 (Framework for the assessment of the sustainable use of materials) encourages manufacturers to give due consideration to the environmental, social and economic impacts when assessing potential use of materials in their products.

Switzerland Tops Fire Safety League Table

With two deaths per million of its population, Switzerland has the lowest fire-related death rate among countries surveyed in a new study from the US Fire Administration entitled "Fire Death Trends: An international Perspective". The UK has the ninth lowest death rate from fire out of 24 industrialised nations at 7.6 deaths per million.

You would imagine that a system that is tested and approved to stringent standards, runs for only half an hour each week and is regularly maintained would not be an obvious candidate to need remote monitoring. Fire pump packages are such systems but it would be wrong to believe that vigilant monitoring is not required. The consequences to life and property are such that not to do so would be irresponsible.
