Euro-MPs Call for Tougher Oil Rig Safety Standard

Tougher oil rig safety standards in Europe are being demanded by Euro-MPs following last year's Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. A 602 to 64 vote in the European Parliament also called for new responsibilities to be placed on oil and gas rig operators to cover the cost of any spills. The moves come ahead of European Commission's proposals for the first EU-wide laws on oil platform safety.

Sprinklers have been cited as having recently saved a number of buildings from being destroyed by fire.A McDonald's restaurant adjacent to the Scandinavian football stadium in Gothenburg, Sweden, suffered an arson attack when windows were smashed and 10 litres of petrol were poured into the restaurant and set alight.

Tighter Criteria for FIA Fire Risk Assessment Members

Fire risk assessment membership of the UK's Fire Industry Association (FIA) has more than halved following the introduction of tougher membership criteria back in April this year. While the FIA has removed 20 or more companies from the list on a permanent basis, they continue to work with another 25 to help them get through the process. There are now around 40 member organisations providing fire risk assessment services, compared with the 85 companies listed before the new criteria came into force.
